Surprisingly, a significant portion, 20%, of the world’s gold supply comes from artisanal and small-scale miners. However, many of these miners operate outside legal frameworks, resorting to hazardous practices involving toxic chemicals like mercury. To address this pressing issue, the Minamata Convention is actively advocating for mercury-free mining practices. By promoting safer and more sustainable methods, the convention aims to safeguard the well-being of workers and protect the environment from the detrimental effects of mercury contamination.
