The European Union (EU) is taking a two-pronged approach to securing critical raw materials like lithium: ensuring access for European markets while promoting sustainable development in African nations where these materials are found. The MaVal Africa project, funded by the EU, embodies this approach by working closely with African states to achieve these goals.
The World Resources Forum (WRF)Program Director Dr Shahrzad Manoochehri who is a representative of the MaVal Africa project under the WRP , explained the project’s mission. MaVal Africa aims to improve the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance of artisanal and small-scale miners (ASMs) while facilitating their access to financing. This focus on responsible mining practices aligns with the global trend towards sustainable lithium extraction and green energy production.
The ongoing workshop in Zimbabwe, specifically designed for small-scale lithium miners, exemplifies this commitment. The workshop curriculum incorporates presentations, group work, and field visits to equip miners with the skills and knowledge needed to enhance their operations and contribute to a more sustainable ASM sector.
MaVal Africa’s reach extends beyond Zimbabwe, operating in other African countries with abundant critical raw materials. By fostering responsible mining practices and local development, the project strives to create a win-win situation for the EU and African nations alike.
