In the tapestry of Zimbabwean mining, the voices of Artisan – small scale miners (ASM) reverberate with a resounding plea for representation and inclusivity in government deliberations. The Zimbabwe Association of Women in Mining Associations (ZAWIMA), articulated the pressing need for miners to have a seat at the table when critical decisions are made.

Speaking at the Zimbabwe School of Mines ASM training conducted by Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association ( ZELA), World Resources Program under MaVal Africa Project and Christian Aid Zimbabwe , ZAWIMA Patrion Blessing Hungwe said there is a need for ASM to be part of the policy formulation in government.

“We need representation in government,” asserted Hungwe. “We need representation in making out the legislations as legislators.” She emphasized the pivotal role of miners in shaping policies and financial frameworks that directly impact their livelihoods. From tax regulations to resource allocation, Hungwe underscored the imperative of ensuring that the voices of artisanal small scale miners are heard and heeded.

Central to the discourse is the equitable distribution of resources and the formulation of taxation policies that strike a balance between sustainability and economic viability. Hungwe advocates for a fair and transparent taxation system that incentivizes compliance while safeguarding the interests of miners. “We need representation where things that have anything to do with artisanal small scale miners are discussed,” she said.

ZELA Mining Engineer and Technical Officer Tatenda Mapooze, highlighted on the multifaceted challenges confronting small scale miners. “Artisanal small scale miners lack the prerequisite skills that enable them to mine more responsibly and sustainably,” Mapooze observed. From geological knowledge gaps to safety concerns, miners grapple with an array of obstacles that impede their progress and jeopardize their well-being.

In response to these challenges, the Artisanal Small Scale Mining training emerged as a beacon of hope, offering a comprehensive curriculum designed to address knowledge deficiencies and enhance mining practices. Through targeted interventions and capacity-building initiatives, miners are equipped with the tools and expertise needed to navigate the intricacies of the mining landscape with confidence and resilience.
